Absolutely Fundamental Linux Site (AFLS)

Here is a site that is essential for enhancing your Fedora Core (or redhat) based Linux experience. Freshrpms. Based on apt-get, freshrpms supplies up to date repositories of easily installed linux apps that fedora/redhat didn't see fit to include in in theur disto.

Cool linux app

Bittorrent is a very cool linux app. I know it runs on wondows and Mac too. But, who cares? I found an a frontend for bittorrent that actually improves it's performance (at least for me it did). It's a java app (again it runs on windows and mac) and it can be found at http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

Cool linux app

Manedit is an app designed to make man page creation and editing easier for the uninittiated.

fedora and dvd playback

DVD playback worked in redhat 9 (after setting it up; it didn't work out of the box). In fedora though, either my dvd rom drive is broke, or fedora requires additional dvd setup that redhat 9 did not. Fedora is running just like I want it to, except for this one issue. Something else to figure out.

Duct Tape: use #102

Last night my 20 month old daughter decided to take off her diaper. Problem was, the diaper was full of the worst stuff a diaper can be full of. It was everywhere! She had to at least partially take off her pajamas to get to the diaper; that was obviously no problem for her. Sge was laying in the bed with her full and open diaper layinig on top of her stomach. I will leave off the rest of the details. Tonight when I was getting her ready for bed I applied two strips of duct tape to her diaper. I don't think she will be taking her diaper off tonight. I will know in the morning.

I got my cam working. I had to download the gphoto2, libgphoto2, and gtkam source files and compile. It works now. Only took 10 minutes--still a pain thoiugh.

argh! Fedora refuses to work with my Canon S45 digital camera. It worked with redhat 9....so it has to work with fedora, so one would think. I don't mind trying to figure stuff out; I just don't like having to do it twice.

Been using fedora core 1 for 9 days now. It feels good. It is better than RedHat 9. Feels more cutting edge. Easier to get new stuff with apt and yum built in. I briefly tried Debian Woddy and Knoppix (again ) on my Japanese laptop. Fedora was the only one of the three to install hassle free. I may try Suse, but I doubt it. I am a gnome user and don't like anything about kde; besides Suse's gnome packages are older. I think I am gonna stick with fedora :-)

Got a dual headed machine now:-) I don't know how I have gotten along with out two monitors for so long.

Monday, November 10, 2003

First full day with fedora core 1. Nice. It's still pretty irratating to have to go download all the files you need just to play DVD's and music.

If you are a windows user who is afraid to take the plunge and switch to linux becuase you can't do withour that special app that will only run on windows, then take a look at the table of equivalents / replacements / analogs of windows software in linux. You have run out of excuses, you big baby :-)

First SCO said they were going to charge you for using linux...now they are saying they will pay you not to. Sound too weird to be true? Click here

I got my Linux Professional Institute (LPI) Certification today!

I am downloading the fedora project's core 1 as I type this. Bittorrent is a good thing. I have been playing with knoppix ( I downloaded the latest release for that last night), on my daughter's win98 machine; Contemplating debian. I am even thinking about switching to Vector Linux (based on slackware). ARGH! This is fun enough I guess, I just don't like having to make this decision. I was happy the way things were. I am pretty sure I am gonna be sticking with fedora. Don't know for sure yet though.

Giving back the Mac G4 my brother loaned me; Not really gonna miss it. Thinking about putting linux on my girl's computer; She has the only windows machine in the house. I am thinking about using it for another test machine, my laptop is a little slow.

Saw The Matrix Revolutions this morning. I guess when viewd as a whole all three movies together rock. This one by itself is a little dissapointing though.

One of the advantages of being presently unemployed is that I will be seeing The Matrix Revolutions today at 9:00 am.

I just watched American Splendor. Very good movie.

Tuesday, November 04, 2003

After having thought about it off and on for most od the day (not too much mind you to make me forget that "Matrix Revolutions" comes out tomorrow ), I realize that soon for the first time since the summer of 1996, I will be without at least one RedHat linux machine. No big deal really...I guess. No one really likes change, but almost everybody hates change when it is forced on them. I am being forced to leave the number of RedHat users. I know, I know...there is the Fedora Project; I was feeling pretty excited about Fedora when I first heard of it, and I briefly tried beta one, but stuck with betas 2 and 3 becuse they were better, but now--I don't know how to feel or what t0 do. This may seem stupid to any nongeeks reading this (who invited you anywya?). I don't want to have to decide between debian, fedora, gentoo, and slackware. But, I am being forced too. I don't know how good of a decision this is going to turn out to be in the long run, for RedHat...or for me.

Ugh, with all the news today, and especially with the comments made by RedHat's CEO. I am starting to think a little harder about my next OS. It'll stil be linux, but I don't know if it will be Debian, or Fedora.

think, think, think........

Wow! Lunux is REALLY in the news: Novell buys SuSE

Makes me wonder if RedHat is now ripe for picking as well.

From the "Say it ain't so" department:

Matthew Szulik, chief executive of Linux vendor Red Hat, said on Monday that although Linux is capable of exceeding expectations for corporate users, home users should stick with Windows: "I would say that for the consumer market place, Windows probably continues to be the right product line," he said. "I would argue that from the device-driver standpoint and perhaps some of the other traditional functionality, for that classic consumer purchaser, it is my view that (Linux) technology needs to mature a little bit more."

I am glad no one told me that 7 years ago, or I would still be stuck with windows!

Found a really font site: ACIDFONTS ; go there now.

RedHat Linux is Dead! But wait, you can still get Fedora for free.

What follows is the text of the email RedHat Network subscribers recieved:

Thank you for being a Red Hat Network customer.

This e-mail provides you with important information about the upcoming discontinuation of Red Hat Linux, and resources to assist you with your migration to another Red Hat solution.

As previously communicated, Red Hat will discontinue maintenance and errata support for Red Hat Linux 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 8.0 as of December 31, 2003. Red Hat will discontinue maintenance and errata support for Red Hat Linux 9 as of April 30, 2004. Red Hat does not plan to release another product in the Red Hat Linux line.

With the recent announcement of Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3, you'll find migrating to Enterprise Linux appealing. We understand that transitioning to another Red Hat solution requires careful planning and implementation. We have created a migration plan for Red Hat Network customers to help make the transition as simple and seamless as possible. Details:

****************

If you purchase Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS or ES Basic before February 28, 2004, you will receive 50% off the price for two years.[*] (That's two years for the price of one.)

****************

In addition, we have created a Red Hat Linux Migration Resource Center to address your migration planning and other questions, such as:

* What are best practices for implementing the migration to Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

* Are there other migration alternatives?

* How do I purchase Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS or ES Basic at the price above?

* What if my paid subscription to RHN extends past April 30, 2004?

****************

Find out more about your migration options with product comparisons, whitepapers and documentation at the Red Hat Linux Migration Resource Center:

http://www.redhat.com/solutions/migration/rhl/rhn

Or read the FAQ written especially for Red Hat Network customers:

https://rhn.redhat.com/help/rhlmigrationfaq/

Sincerely,

Red Hat, Inc.

[*] Limit 10 units. Higher volume purchase inquiries should contact a regional Red Hat sales representative. Contact numbers available at

http://www.redhat.com/solutions/migration/rhl/rhn

--the Red Hat Network Team

The Bottom Line:

If you want to use an enterprise-level Linux distribution with the Red Hat name on it, you are going to spend significant money. If you want to keep using a Red Hat-style distribution for free, you'll use Fedora. And if neither of these options appeal to you, there are plenty of other Linux distributions out there for you to choose from.

From their website "Freevo is an open-source digital video jukebox (PVR, DVR) based on Linux in addition to a number of open-source audio/video tools." This is something that I keep saying that I am gonna do. I am gonna do this when it comes time to buy a new tv.

I can highly recommend Vector Linux, for anyone who needs to run linux on older hardware. It is the fastest linux I have ever used. I am not currently running it now, but have in the past on my laptop. Here is a review at http://www.osnews.com
